According to the statistics of occupational accidents, it is observed that the number of accidents occurred in shipbuilding industry is high and the rate of deaths and serious injuries among these accidents is higher than in other industries. However, the number of the studies to prevent these accidents in both industrial and scientific practices is considerably low. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop an efficient risk preventive model in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations for industrial organizations. The approach proposed in this study differs from those described in the literature, because it is based on fuzzy set theory in order to cope with uncertainties on probability and severity definitions in terms of occupational health and safety. Furthermore, in this paper, risk severity is considered in terms of harm to worker, harm to environment, and harm to hardware, whereas in the literature, risk severity is generally considered solely in terms of only harm to worker. Then, risk magnitude is obtained by utilizing fuzzy inference system. The proposed approach is applied to a shipyard located in the Marmara Region in order to illustrate the applicability of the model

EVALUATION OF PIPE CUTTING TECHNOLOGIES IN SHIPBUILDING

Pipes are the most significant ones of the components which constitutes the vessel body. Pipes are fabricated in piping plant at shipyard and exposed to some processes such as cutting, bending, hydrostatic tests, galvanizing and so on. Cutting operation is also vital process among the other ones since it is very crucial that the cutting surfaces are flat and the right angles. In shipyards, there are various pipe cutting methods such as plasma, oxygen, metal saw, band saw and abrasive cutting wheel. Shipyard production department desires to implement the most appropriate pipe cutting method in order to operate properly and effectively. The purpose of this study is to present the most convenient pipe cutting method according to the determined criteria. For this, fuzzy TOPSIS technique which is one of the most used fuzzy Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods in the literature is employed. The importance degrees of the criteria are evaluated by using fuzzy AHP. As a result of the presented study, the most appropriate pipe cutting method is determined for ship building industry

Selection among Renewable Energy Alternatives Using Fuzzy Axiomatic Design: The Case of Turkey

    No full text
Renewable energy is a source of energy derived from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, water, tides, hot dry rocks, magma, hot water springs, fire wood, animal manure, and crop residues and waste. These renewable energy technologies are called with its source such as solar power, wind power, hydropower, geothermal and biomass. Energy resources are so important in perspective of economics and politics for all countries. Hence, the selection of the best alternative for any country takes an important role for energy investments. In this paper, axiomatic design (AD) methodology is suggested for the selection among renewable energy alternatives under fuzzy environment. AD methodology works under fuzziness which evaluates the alternatives under objective or subjective criteria with respect to the functional requirements obtained from experts. In the application of the proposed methodologies the most appropriate renewable energy alternative is determined for Turkey under fuzziness

DEVELOPING WEB BASED DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR EVALUATION OCCUPATIONAL RISKS AT SHIPYARDS

In this study, a web based decision support system (WBDSS) has been developed to provide decision aid for risk analysis on occupational health and safety at shipyards. The system has been constructed as a modular structure to make its application easy for all kind of firms. The WBDSS is rule based and its database includes safety measures and risks for each tool and machine used in shipbuilding process. In addition, probability and hazard values have been involved in the case of violated measures. The frequencies of the violations that occurred in the work environment are entered to the system by the user. Hence, the system provides a decision support about the risks related to facilities and the cautions to be taken in the workplace. The developed WBDSS has the capability of determining accident, almost accident, and threat formation factors at workplace according to the changing parameters. In this aspect, it enables one to constantly monitor, check and evaluate risk preventive measures. Then, the capabilities of the suggested decision support system have been tested with different scenarios for shipyard processes. When the developed WBDSS is applied to all workplaces, it is aimed at providing a decrease in the number of accidents which cause death, occupational illness, injury, and temporary incapability

‎Machines can model and improve the human mind’s capabilities through artificial intelligence‎. ‎One of the most popular tools of artificial intelligence is fuzzy sets‎, ‎which can capture and model the vagueness and impreciseness in human thoughts‎. ‎This paper‎, ‎first of all‎, ‎introduces the recent extensions of ordinary fuzzy sets and then presents a literature review on the integration of fuzzy sets with other artificial intelligence techniques such as automated reasoning‎, ‎autonomous agents‎, ‎multi-agent systems‎, ‎machine learning‎, ‎case-based reasoning‎, ‎deep learning‎, ‎information reasoning‎, ‎information representation‎, ‎natural language processing‎, ‎symbolic reasoning‎, ‎and neural networks‎. ‎Graphical illustrations of literature review results are presented for each of these integrated artificial intelligence techniques‎. ‎The results of a patent search on fuzzy artificial intelligence are also given‎
